So I know this is not on the list of 100 things to do in Cape Town but I thought it was just too awesome not to blog about! So here we have #102, The Old Biscuit Mill. If you feeling hungry and the traditional means of filling your stomach is not exciting enough then the The Old Biscuit Mill is for you! Dozens of people around Cape Town come to the The Old Biscuit Mill every Saturday and set up a little food/beverage stand and invite you to come eat some unique and exotic foods. The atmosphere is amazing as you fight your way through a vibing food market trying to decide which delicious meal to have for breakfast.
The Biscuit Mill offers such a huge range of different foods that it literally caters for any person’s taste. What you would typically find there ranges from french pizzas to gourmet burgers to seafood platters to breakfast pastries… the list goes on. A typical Saturday for me would go like this: I would start off with a hazelnut and chocolate smoothie. I would then move onto an eggs benedict or french pizza as my main course. Then, if I feeling up to it and there is still a bit of room left, I would get myself a Belgian waffle to top it all off. What generally happens is once you have bought your meal, you can find a seat inside the market where they taken doors and turned them into tables by putting them on supports… it actually quite an odd concept but still pretty awesome! The other alternative is to head on outside and catch some sun where they have set up haystacks for you to sit on while you enjoy your delicious food. The market also sells various types of red and white wine, some champagne, some awesome exotic beers and even some strange things like honey liqueur. Once you have eaten at the market, there are also other things to do. There are some shops and stalls directly across from the market that sell clothing, jewelry, art and other things, as well as some other restaurants like the Test Kitchen if the market doesn’t do it for you. There is also one more thing you must definitely do if you head to the Biscuit Mill…and that is visit the chocolate factory. They are also located across from the market place and sell some of the most amazing chocolate at very cheap prices so its a definite must do!
As I said above the market runs every Saturday and opens at about 8am and closes around midday. It is located just after the Salt River circle down Albert Road in Woodstock. There is very limited parking directly outside so what I suggest you do is drive past the Biscuit Mill and turn up one of the one way streets and find some parking there on the street. There is no entrance fee into the market which is quite nice but everything in the market is fairly expensive but you definitely pay for good quality food. So do yourself a favour, open up your next Saturday morning, grab a couple of friends and head on down to The Old Biscuit Mill because it is literally an amazing experience and something that is very unique to Cape Town!
